Compression Check: Testing and Inspection

1. Perform compression test with engine at normal operating temperature and coolant temperature at least 176 °F.
2. Disconnect electrical wire from stop solenoid on injection pump and insulate end of wire.
3. Clean all unions and area near connections, then disconnect injector fuel lines using wrench tool No.3035, or equivalent.
4. Remove all injectors and heat shields.
5. Mount suitable adapter tool in place of injectors, then insert old heat shield between adapter and cylinder head.
6. Screw compression tester tool No. VW 1381, or equivalent, into adapter by hand.
7. Operate starter until compression tester indicates no further rise in pressure.
8. Correct compression is 493 psi, with a maximum difference of 72.5 psi between highest and lowest cylinder. Minimum compression is 406 psi.
9. Install injectors and new heat shields. Torque injector retainers to specifications.
10. Connect injector fuel lines and torque to 18 ft. lbs.
11. Connect wire to stop solenoid on injection pump.
12. Start engine and accelerate several times to clear air bubbles.
