Compression Check: Testing and Inspection
Compression Test
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
‹› Hinged Socket (3220)
‹› Compression Tester (V.A.G 1763)
‹› Adapter (V.A.G 1763/8)
‹› Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)
Test Conditions
‹› Engine oil temperature a min. 30 °C (86 °F)
Test Sequence
-
Remove the glow plug for each cylinder using (3220). Refer to => [ Glow Plugs ] See: Powertrain Management/Glow Plug System/Glow
Plug/Service and Repair.
-
Install the (V.A.G 1763/8) in place of the glow plugs.
-
Check the compression pressure using (V.A.G 1763).
‹› Using the tester, refer to the operating Instructions
-
Start the engine until the tester shows no further pressure increase.
Compression pressure:
New: 25 to 31 bar overpressure.
Wear limit: 19 bar
Permissible difference between all cylinders: 5 bar
-
Install the glow plugs using (3220). Refer to => [ Glow Plugs ] See: Powertrain Management/Glow Plug System/Glow Plug/Service and Repair.
-
Check the Engine Control Module (ECM) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory. Refer to => [ Engine Control Module DTC Memory,
Checking and Erasing ] See: Powertrain Management/Computers and Control Systems/Engine Control Module/Testing and Inspection/Scan Tool
