Ignition Timing: Testing and Inspection
Digifant II Timing Advance

1.

Start the engine and run it for at least two minutes at normal operating temperature.

2.

Disconnect the harness plug from the coolant temperature sensor.

3.

Raise the engine speed to 2300 rpm and record the timing value.

4.

Reconnect the coolant temperature sensor and briefly raise the engine speed above 3000 rpm.

5.

Recheck the timing value at 2300 rpm.  The timing should be 27 - 33 more advanced than with the sensor disconnected.

6.

If the timing does not advance as specified, check:

a. Knock sensor mounting bolt torque
b. Knock sensor resistance
c. Knock sensor wiring

7.

If the knock sensor is OK, the Digifant control unit is probably faulty.

8.

If Disconnecting and connecting the coolant temperature sensor has no effect on the timing advance, check:

a. Continuity of coolant temp. sensor wiring
b. Coolant temp. sensor

9.

If sensor and wiring are OK, the Digifant control unit is probably faulty.
