SUBJECT:
Catalytic converter, heatshield replacement
A loose catalytic converter heatshield can either be re-welded or replaced separately without replacing the entire catalytic convener.
The replacement shield part number is 191 253 243C, which fits all Golf/Jetta converters.
The shield is made of Stainless Steel and MUST be welded with Stainless Steel wire using a MIG welder. The inert gas used must meet the following
specifications to ensure a weld which is as corrosion resistant as possible.
1)
Argon 92%, Oxygen 8% or less or
2)
Argon 97.5%, Carbon Dioxide 2.5% or less
Arc and Acetylene gas welding are NOT to be used for this repair because damage to the heatshield will occur in the process. If your shop doesn't have a
MIG welder with the specified gases available; sublet the work to a local welding shop that does.
