Oxygen Sensor: Testing and Inspection

Connect a duty cycle meter and with engine running and at normal operating temperature, note the reading.

Manually deflect the air flow sensor plate slightly and then release.  Watch the meter.  The duty cycle should change to compensate for a rich
mixture then go back to its previous range.  If it fails to do this, perform the following tests:

a. With engine off, disconnect the oxygen sensor and ground the lead going to the ECU. 
b. Connect a volt meter to the oxygen sensor.  Start the engine and watch the voltage reading.  In this full rich condition, the oxygen sensor

should put out 0.45 - 1.0 VDC. 

1. If voltage is lower, replace oxygen sensor.
2. If voltage is OK, check for continuity in wire to the ECU.  Resistance should be 0 ohms.

Connect a volt meter to the oxygen sensor heater wires at the two terminal connector.  With the fuel pump relay bypassed, the plug should read 12
VDC.

Connect an ammeter to the heater wires.  The heater should draw 0.5 - 1.3 A.  If amperage is incorrect, oxygen sensor heating element is faulty,
and the oxygen sensor should be replaced.
