Ignition Cable: Testing and Inspection
PROCEDURE
-
Remove spark plug wires (mark position at cap and plug).
-
Check wires visually for cracks, rub marks, oil saturation and corrosion at terminals. Replace if needed.
Testing Spark Plug Wire
-
Measure overall resistance of each wire. Reading should be between:
4600 - 7400 ohms
-
If reading is correct, plug wire is good.
-
If reading is incorrect, measure resistance of spark plug connector only. Reading should be between:
4000 - 6000 ohms
-
If reading is incorrect, replace and retest with new connector.
Connector Testing
-
Measure resistance of cap connector only. Reading should be between:
600 - 1400 ohms
-
If reading is incorrect, replace and retest with new connector.
-
If both wire connectors are within specifications, replace and retest with new wire.
NOTE: Ignition wire alone, without connector, should have continuity (approx. 0 ohm).
-
Reinstall all ignition wires.
