If the part number reads 701 909 601 D, followed by code "MASKE3" (Illustration A), no replacement is necessary

If the part number reads 701 909 601 D, followed by a code other than "MASKE3" or is blank (Illustration B), carefully replace the unit with a
new ECM part number 701 909 603 D or 6N0 909 601 D after disconnecting battery ground strap
CAUTION:
^ Disconnect battery ground (GND) strap before removing air bag ECM
^ Do not break harness connector clip
^ Handle ECM very carefully
^ Protect radio code

After installation of a new air bag ECM, set ECM to basic setting with VAG 1551 scan tool and follow with a complete functional test

If the module coding reads "00000" instead of "00068" (see Illustration C ) coding must be updated
