Lifter / Lash Adjuster: Testing and Inspection
CAUTION: After installing new lifter(s) the engine must not be started for approx. 30 minutes. Hydraulic build up must subside, otherwise the valves
will strike the pistons.
NOTE:
-
Replace faulty lifter (cannot be adjusted or repaired).
-
Irregular valve noises during engine start are normal.
1. Start engine and run until the radiator fan has switched on once.
2. Increase engine speed to about 2500 rpm for 2 minutes.
3. If the hydraulic lifters are still noisy, locate faulty lifter(s) as follows:
-
Remove cylinder head (valve) cover.
-
Rotate crankshaft clockwise, until cam lobe of the lifter to be checked is pointing upwards.
-
Measure clearance between cam lobe and lifter.
4. If clearance exceeds 0.1 mm, replace lifter.
5. If clearance is less than 0.1 mm or zero, proceed with checking as follows:
-
Press lifter down with a wooden or plastic wedge.
-
If free travel in excess of 1 mm is felt before lifter contacts valve, replace lifter.
