Starter Motor: Description and Operation

^ With the ignition in the start position, a solenoid switch engages the starter's drive pinion with the ring gear on the engine flywheel. To reduce stress

and wear, the solenoid does not switch current to the starter until the drive pinion is fully engaged. Also, the drive pinion has an overrunning clutch to
prevent the starter from being driven by the engine.

^ Vehicles that have passive restraint seat belts have a starting interlock feature that prevents the starter from being activated if the seat belts are not

fastened. 

^ Current from terminal 50 of the ignition switch goes to the starter interlock relay, and then from the relay to the starter. The relay is controlled by the

seat belt warning control unit. If the seat belts are not fastened properly when the ignition is turned to the start position, current to the starter will be
interrupted.

^ Different starters are used on these vehicles based on the engine and transmission combination. Starters are not interchangeable. When the starter is

replaced, be sure the replacement part is correct for the application.
