Function
Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) J220 communicates with other Data-Bus capable control modules.
These control modules are connected via two data bus wires which are twisted together (High and Low), and exchange information (messages). Missing
information on the data bus is recognized as an error by both the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) J220 and by other Data-Bus control modules.
Trouble-free operation of the CAN-bus requires that it have a terminal resistance. This central terminal resistance is located in the Motronic Engine
Control Module (ECM) J220.
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
-
Hand multimeter V.A.G 1526 or Multimeter V.A.G 1715
-
Connector test set V.A.G 1594
-
Wiring diagram
Test conditions
-
A CAN-bus malfunction was recognized via On Board Diagnostic (OBD).
Test sequence
-
Switch off ignition.
-
Connect test box to Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) J220 Wiring harness is not connected. See: Testing and Inspection/Reading and
Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes/Scan Tool Connecting/Test Box, Connecting For Wiring Test
-
Measure resistance between sockets 58 + 60 of test box.
Specification: 60 to 72 Ohms
If specification is obtained:
-
Check Data-Bus wiring according to wiring diagram.
-
Erase DTC memory for Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) J220. See: Testing and Inspection/Scan Tool Testing and Procedures/With
Generic Scan Tool/Diagnostic Mode 4: Reset/Erase Diagnostic Data
-
Generate readiness code. See: Testing and Inspection/Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes/Readiness Code, Generating
If specification is not obtained:
-
Replace Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) J220.
