Test conditions
-
The respective fuses of Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) J220 must be OK.
-
The parking brake must be applied, otherwise daytime running lights are switched on.
-
On vehicles with automatic transmission, selector lever must be in position "P" or "N".
-
The ground (GND) connections between engine and body must be OK.
-
Engine must be cold.
Function test
-
Connect Vehicle Diagnostic and Service Information System VAS 5052. See: Computers and Control Systems/Testing and Inspection/Reading
and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes/Scan Tool Connecting/Vehicle Diagnostic and Service Information System VAS 5052, Connecting
-
Switch ignition on.
-
Under address word 33, select "Diagnostic mode 1: Read measured values".
-
Select measured value "PID 13: Coolant temperature"
-
Check specified value of coolant temperature.
If specification is not obtained:
-
Perform test according to the following table.
If specification is obtained:
-
Start engine and run at idle speed.
The temperature value must increase steadily.
NOTE:
-
The temperature increases in increments of 1.0 degrees C.
-
If the engine shows problems in certain temperature ranges and the temperature does not climb uniformly, the temperature signal is intermittent
and the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor G62 must be replaced.
Continuation of test if indication is approx. -40.0 degrees C:
