NOTE: When servicing terminals in harness connector of Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) G39, use only gold-plated terminals.
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Hand multimeter V.A.G 1526 or Multimeter V.A.G 1715

Connector test set V.A.G 1594

Test conditions
-
The respective fuse of Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) G39 must be OK.
-
Battery voltage must be at least 11.5 Volts.
-
All electrical consumers such as, lights and rear window defroster must be switched off.
-
The parking brake must be applied, otherwise daytime running lights are switched on.
-
If vehicle is equipped with an A/C system, it must be switched off.
-
The ground (GND) connections between engine and body must be OK.
-
Exhaust system must be properly sealed between catalytic converter and cylinder head.

Coolant temperature must be at least 80 degrees C. See: Computers and Control Systems/Testing and Inspection/Scan Tool Testing and

The Oxygen Sensor (O2S) Heater Z19 before catalytic converter must be OK, checking. See: Computers and Control Systems/Testing and

Function test

Connect the Vehicle Diagnostic and Service Information System VAS 5052. See: Computers and Control Systems/Testing and
Inspection/Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes/Scan Tool Connecting/Vehicle Diagnostic and Service Information System VAS

Start engine and run at idle speed.

Under address word 33, select "Diagnostic mode 5: Read Lambda test results".

Select the oxygen sensor test results for the Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) G39 (sensor 1) and check if the specified values are attained. See:

Lambda Test Results

End diagnosis and switch ignition off.
If specifications are not obtained:

Test oxygen sensor wires.
