Camshaft Oil Seal: Service and Repair
Camshaft Gasket
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
‹› Pulling fixture (10-203)
‹› Seal remover (3240)
‹› Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1331)
‹› Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1332)
‹› Bolt M12•65
Removing

Remove toothed belt from camshaft and high pressure fuel pump. Refer to --> [ Toothed Belt, Removing, Installing and Tensioning ] See: Timing

Remove camshaft sprocket and hub. Refer to --> [ Camshafts ] See: Camshaft, Lifters and Push Rods/Service and Repair/Camshafts.

Remove inner portion of seal puller (3240) two rotations (approximately 3 mm) from outer portion and secure with knurled-head screw.

Grease threaded head of seal puller (3240), position and screw into oil seal as far as possible with forced pressure.

Loosen knurled bolt and turn inner part against camshaft until seal is removed.
Installing
‹› The sealing lip of the sealing ring may not be additionally oiled or greased.

Before installing, remove oil remains from camshaft journal with a clean cloth.

Tape over the groove on the taper of the camshaft with commercially available adhesive strip (e.g. scotch tape)

Carefully set seal onto camshaft.

Press seal in as far as stop with the oil seal driver (10-203) thrust piece and bolt M12•65.
