New Beetle L4-1.8L Turbo (AWP) (2003)

Set camshaft sprocket to TDC No. 1 cylinder by turning crankshaft. Mark on camshaft sprocket must align with mark on cylinder head cover.

Remove cylinder head cover.

Release tensioner and remove toothed belt from camshaft sprocket.

Turn crankshaft back slightly.

Remove camshaft sprocket. When loosening camshaft sprocket bolt counter-hold with 3036.

Remove woodruff key from camshaft.

Screw camshaft sprocket securing bolt -arrow- into camshaft onto stop by hand, to guide seal extractor.

Unscrew inner part of oil seal extractor 2085 two turns (approximately 3 mm) out of outer part and lock in position with knurled screw.

Lubricate threaded head of oil seal extractor, place it in position and exerting firm pressure screw it into oil seal as far as possible.

Loosen knurled screw and turn inner part of extractor against camshaft until oil seal has been extracted.
Installing
Note: Gradual introduction of PTFE oil seal (identifying characteristics: no annular spring, sealing lip wider). The sealing lip of this oil ring must not
be oiled or lubricated. A plain encased seal of older construction (with annular spring) may be replaced with a PTFE oil seal, but not vice versa.

Before installing, remove oil remains from crankshaft journal with a clean cloth.
