Using the VAS 5051/5052, select measured value blocks 15/16/17 to see if misfiring is recognized.

If misfiring can not be reproduced, perform a test drive in different load and temperature ranges.

Use freeze frame from the OBD function to assist in diagnosis.

Is misfire evident and does it take place on several cylinders?

Monitor the measure value blocks to see if misfiring occurs only on one cylinder (continue to point 5) or on several cylinders at the same time.

If misfire is identified on several cylinders it must be distinguished between HARD (noticeable), and SOFT (un-noticeable) misfiring (continue to
point 6).

Is misfire identified as always being on the same cylinder?

Remove coil and spark plug from affected cylinder for inspection. see Repair Manual Group 24 and 28 in ElsaWeb.

Inspect for hidden causes, e.g. water in spark plug access hole.

If water damage is found, replace the affected ignition coil and all other old version ignition coils.

NOTE:

Only replace plug if damage to spark plug has been identified.

If no water is present, exchange the suspected coil with another from a non-faulty cylinder, and observe the measured value blocks to see if the
misfiring now exists on the exchange cylinder.

Replace only the affected component.

If misfire does not occur on exchange cylinder:

Inspect coil and fuel injector electrical wiring, and harness end connectors for damage.

Check mechanical condition of engine cylinder with misfire (compression, cylinder leakage test).

Swap the injector with the injector from the exchange cylinder.

Replace the injector if the misfiring moves to the exchange cylinder, see repair Manual Group 24 in ElsaWeb.

If misfire does occur on exchange cylinder:

Replace the component determined as the root cause.

If misfiring occurs on several cylinders at the same time, use the following list as a guide for diagnosis:
