Body Foam Insulation

On this vehicle various bodywork cavities are foam treated.

The location of the foam treated areas is described in the individual repair instructions.

Treating with foam reduces the transference of noises to the interior cabin space when driving.

Treatment is via pre-formed molded foam parts (parts designation: insulation).

In the parts catalog the molded foam parts are illustrated on illustration 864-00.

The pre-formed molded parts are installed during construction of the body shell and they increase their volume in the paint shop drying oven at approx. 
180 degrees C after priming.

As these temperatures cannot be achieved under normal workshop conditions, proceed as follows:

Prerequisites

Before continuing with this procedure ensure that the part for replacement is correctly prepared e.g. cut-out, adapted, corrosion protection
measures etc.

Remove foam material remains on vehicle.

Reinstate paintwork.

Replace molded foam parts.

Apply sealing cord AKD 497 010 04 R10 all round edge of molded foam part.

Position molded foam part in vehicle.

Position new part (e.g. A-pillar), when doing this press new part carefully into position in area of molded foam part and weld in

-

Do not SG (shielded arc welding) weld within 15 mm (both sides) of molded foam part.

Once vehicle is painted reinstate the cavity sealing within repair area.
