Update Programming, MIL ON or Flashing, DTCs P0420 or P0441 Stored in ECM
ECM requires update to enhance the following system strategies:
NOTE:
-
DO NOT diagnose or replace components due to misfire faults before performing the update function as explained in this bulletin.
-
DO NOT diagnose, repair or replace Catalyst system components before performing the update function as explained in this bulletin.
-
DO NOT diagnose, repair or replace Evaporative system components, including the Evaporative system purge valve -N80-, before performing the
update function as explained in this bulletin.
Technical Background
1. Improved ECM software resolves concerns related to:
a. Adjustment to OBD catalytic converter diagnostic parameter strategy.
b. Cold start secondary air strategy.
c. EVAP strategy change to prevent system testing below 5 °C (40 °F).
d. Adjustment to diagnostic strategy tolerances for changes to air intake volume over time.
Production Solution
Software concern was identified after production was concluded.
Service
PROCEDURE:
Engine Control Module Update - Programming (Flashing) using Software Version Management (SVM)
Vehicle requirements
Battery MUST have minimum no-load charge of 12.5V (failure to maintain voltage during update process can lead to ECM failure) (use an Volkswagen
approved Midtronics/InCharge 940 (INC-940) tester/charger to maintain battery voltage).
