Replacing Engine Control Module (ECM)

VAG 1551 scan tool with VAG 1551/3B cable
Removing
-
First print out control module identification and thereby previous control module coding as follows:
-
Connect VAG 1551 scan tool ((VAG 1552). Switch ignition on and select Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- with "Address word"
01. Connecting scan tool and selecting Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220-.
The control module identification and coding are indicated on the display, e.g.:
06A906032EM 1.8L 5VT NB AG4 G 3467

Print out control module identification by pressing scan tool print button.

Press -> button.
-
Press buttons -0- and -6- for function "End output" and confirm entry with -Q- button.

Select function XX

Switch off ignition.
-
Remove inner plenum chamber cover, left.
-
Press retaining tab -arrow- to left and pull control module out.
-
Release connector from control module and disconnect it.

Remove control module.
Installing
-
Install control module connector and lock.
-
Place new control module into retaining frame.
-
Check DTC Memory, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then Erase DTC Memory, Checking and Erasing DTC Memory.

Adapt new control module to immobilizer Repair Manual , Electrical Equipment On Board Diagnostic (OBD), Repair Group 01.

Adapt new control module to Throttle Valve Control Module -J338-.

On vehicles with cruise control system: Check whether this function has been enabled (activated). If "G" is not evident in control module
identification, activate cruise control system.
