Ignition Coil: Testing and Inspection
Ignition Coils With Power Output Stage, Checking
Ignition Coils With Power Output Stage, Checking
NOTE:
-
Ignition coils and power output stage are a common part
-
Primary resistance of ignition coils cannot be measured.
-
Secondary resistance should be tested only with ignition wires connected to ignition coils. To do this, measurements must be made between spark
plug connectors of appropriate ignition coil. This measurement also measures the interference-suppression resistors of all ignition wires.
Special tools and equipment
-
VAG 1598/31 test box
-
VAG 1526 multimeter or VAG 1715 multimeter
-
VAG 1594 connector test kit
-
VAG 1527 voltage test lamp

Test requirements
-
Battery voltage must be at least 11.5 volts.
-
Camshaft Position (CMP) sensors must be in order, testing. See: Camshaft Position Sensor/Testing and Inspection
-
Engine speed (RPM) sensor must be in order, testing. See: Computers and Control Systems/Engine Speed Sensor/Testing and Inspection
Testing Ignition Coils with Ignition Wires
-
Disconnect 5-way connector from ignition coils (N, N128, N158).
-
Disconnect spark plug connectors.
-
Measure resistance between two spark plug connectors of an ignition coil.
Specification: 16 - 27 Kohms
-
Repeat test on other two ignition coils.
If specified values are not obtained:
-
Disconnect ignition wires from ignition coils.
-
Test resistance of ignition wires.
Specification: 3 - 7 Kohms
-
Test secondary resistance values of ignition coils.
Specification: 8 - 14 Kohms
