Passat Sedan V6-2792cc 2.8L DOHC (AAA) SFI (1997)
Test Conditions:
-
Engine NOT Running.
-
Test for sealed batteries only.
-
Turn headlights on high beam for 1 minute to remove surface charge.
-
Disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap.
-
Check Battery Positive Voltage (B+) using SUN VAT 40 or equivalent.
-

If above the minimum voltage (12.5 V):
-
Load test battery.
If below the minimum voltage:
-
Charge battery (12.5 V) See: Service and Repair (Charging Battery(ies).)
Specific Gravity
CAUTION: DO NOT expose a fully discharged battery to freezing temperatures; the battery will be damaged.
NOTE:
-
The specific gravity test, in addition to a voltage test under load (described previously) can accurately determine the battery's state of charge.
-
Hydrometers are used for testing specific gravity. Check the hydrometer calibration frequently to ensure accuracy
-
Test electrolyte in all cells. Average specific gravity should be at least 1.225.
-
Correct for electrolyte temperature it necessary:
-
For every 10 °F above 80 °F, add 0.004 to hydrometer reading
-
For every 10 °F below 80 °F, subtract 0.004 from hydrometer reading

If specific gravity is above 1.225:
-
Load test battery. See:
If specific gravity is below 1.225:
-
Charge battery. See: Service and Repair
If specific gravity varies by more than 0.040 between cells:
-
Replace battery. See Service and Repair.
Visual Check
Check for;
-
Cracked or leaking case.
-
Loose or corroded terminals.
-
Low electrolyte level (below MIN mark).
If electrolyte is low, refill with distilled water and charge battery for several minutes after cells begin gassing (boiling). See: Service and Repair
(Servicing Battery(ies)
CAUTION: DO NOT overfill. Overfilled batteries can boil over. Too little electrolyte reduces the service life of the battery.
