Engine Control Module: Testing and Inspection
Engine Control Module (ECM) Version, Checking

VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST), Connecting
Address Word 01 "Engine Electronics", Selecting

Special tools, testers, required:

-

VAG 1551/1552 Scan Tool using VAG 1551/3 adaptor cable

NOTE:  The VAG 1552 Scan Tool can be used instead of the VAG 1551, however; the VAG 1552 does not have printing capability.

Test conditions:

-

Fuses 12, 28, 29, 32 and 34 OK

-

Battery voltage must be 11.5 Volts minimum

-

Ground connections: right engine mount and on body OK Body Ground connection

Work sequence:

-

Connect VAG 1551 Scan Tool using VAG 1551/3 adaptor cable 

After Scan Tool has been connected:
-

Depending upon desired Function:
Switch ON ignition 
or
Start engine, See Selectable Functions/Testing Functions of On-Board Diagnostics II

NOTES:
-

If display still blank, check Data Link Connector voltage supply

-

If due to an input error "Fault in data transfer!" is displayed, disconnect Scan Tool, reconnect and repeat work step.

Operate Scan Tool taking the displayed information into account 

Display will appear as shown

Display alternately flashes lines 1 and 2

Operate Scan Tool taking the displayed information into account

Press button 1 to select "Rapid data transfer" mode

Press buttons 0 and 1 to select address word 01
