Passat Wagon V6-2792cc 2.8L DOHC (1994)
Lifter / Lash Adjuster: Testing and Inspection
Hydraulic Lifters, Checking
Special Tools Needed:
Feeler gage
Plastic or wooden wedge
NOTE:
Replace defective valve lifters (cannot be repaired or adjusted).
Irregular valve noise is normal when cranking the engine.
-
Start engine and run until radiator fan comes on once.
-
Increase engine speed to about 2500 rpm.
If the valve lifters are still noisy, locate faulty lifters as follows:
-
Remove cylinder head Cover refer to "Cylinder Head Cover, Removing and Installing". See: Cylinder Head Assembly/Service and Repair
-
Turn crankshaft at bolt for vibration damper in clockwise direction until lifter to be checked has moved up.
-
Check clearance between cam and lifter. If clearance is more than 0.1 mm, replace lifter.
-
If you measure less than 0.1 mm or if there is no clearance: Press lifter down with plastic or wooden wedge. If you feel play of more than 0,1
mm until valve opens, replace lifter.
CAUTION: When new lifters were installed, do not start the engine for 30 minutes. The lifters must settle first as otherwise the valves would hit the
pistons.
