Knock Sensor - Troubleshooting

Knock Sensor, Troubleshooting DTC 00524 (2142), 00540 (2144)

MODEL(s): 
Passat w / 2.8L 1993-1994 m.y.

CONDITION

A malfunctioning Knock Sensor circuit can cause Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 00524 and/or 00540 to be stored in the ECM memory.

The DTC Tables on pages 13 and 15 of Repair Manual, Microfiche W42-31-190-F4, give the impression that for each of the three possible causes of
DTC 00524, or 00540 only one possible correction exists. This is not the intention of these tables.

SERVICE

Use the following procedure to eliminate DTC 00524 or 00540:

-

Connect 1551 Scan Tool (ST) (see Repair Manual Microfiche-Passat VR6 1993 W42-031-190-F4).

-

Check for DTC 00524 and/or 00540.

-

Erase stored DTC.

-

Test drive vehicle.

Check DTC memory again, If DTC 00524 and/or 00540 are stored, continue with the following procedure.

-

Check Knock sensor torque (incorrect tightening torque affects Knock sensor operation). Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft lb) if necessary.

Check wiring (see pages 01-37 and 01-38 test steps 23 and 26.)

-

Correct wiring if necessary.

-

Inspect and clean electrical contacts between the Knock sensor connector and harness connection

-

Apply electrical contact enhancer see Technical Bulletin 97-94-02.

-

Test drive vehicle and check for any stored DTC. If DTC 00524 and/or 00540 still exist, replace Knock sensor 061 and/or 066 (see Repair Manual
Group 28.)

If after completing the above suggestions the DTC still exists, contact the Technician's Helpline, prior to replacing the ECM.
