Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Fault reader -V.A.G 1551-
t  Diagnosis lead -V.A.G 1551/3C-
Procedure
–  First print out the control unit identification and thereby the previous control unit coding as follows:
–  Connect fault reader -V.A.G 1551- and select engine electronics control unit with “address word 01” → Chapter.
   
On display of fault reader -V.A.G 1551- the control unit identification is indicated, e.g.:
–  Print out the control unit identification by pressing the fault reader Print button.
–  Press GoTo button.
–  Press buttons 0 and 6 for function “End output” and confirm entry with Q button.
–  Switch off ignition.
–  Remove wiper arms and cowl panel: → Rep. Gr.92
–  Release connectors on diesel direct injection system control unit -J248- and unplug connectors.

–  Unclip thediesel direct injection system control unit -J248- from the retainer -arrows-.
–  Install the new diesel direct injection system control unit -J248-.
–  Check the previous coding and code the new diesel direct injection system control unit -J248- → Chapter
–  Adapt engine control unit to electronic immobilizer → Chapter.
–  Then interrogate the fault memory of the new engine control unit and erase the fault memory if necessary, erase fault memory → Chapter.
