Removing and installing wheel hub with wheel bearing, vehicles with drum brakes
   
Removing and installing wheel hub with wheel bearing, vehicles with drum brakes
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Hub grease cap puller -VW 637/2-
t  Fitting sleeve -3241/4-
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1332-
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1410-

Removing
–  Raise vehicle.
–  Remove wheel.
   
–  Release brake.
–  To do this, insert a screwdriver through a hole in the brake drum and push the wedge upwards.
–  Unscrew bolt for brake drum and remove brake drum.

–  Loosen grease cap from seat by tapping lightly on the claw of the hub grease cap puller -VW 637/2-.

–  Lever off grease cap.
–  Unscrew 12-point nut.
–  Pull wheel hub/wheel bearing unit off stub axle.
Installing
–  Carefully slide wheel hub/wheel bearing unit onto stub axle.
Ensure that the wheel bearing/wheel hub unit does not cant!
–  Use a new 12-point nut and tighten.

–  Drive in dust cap.
Always renew removed dust caps.
Damaged dust caps may allow moisture to enter the bearing. Therefore, always use the tool shown in the illustration.
–  Install wheel and tighten bolts or nuts → Chapter.

Specified torques
ComponentSpecified torque
12-point nut for wheel bearing to stub axle
t  Use new nut
70 Nm + 30° further.
