Front Crankshaft Seal: Service and Repair

Crankshaft Seal, Vibration Damper Side

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

‹› Pressure piece (T40007)

‹› Torque wrench (150 to 800 Nm) (V.A.G 1601)

Removing

-

Remove noise insulation pan.

-

Remove toothed belt --> [ Toothed Belt, Removing, Installing and Tensioning ] See: Timing Components/Timing Belt/Service and
Repair/Removal and Replacement/Toothed Belt, Removing, Installing and Tensioning.

Remove centered bolt - 2 - of toothed belt crankshaft sprocket - 1 - and remove sprocket from end of crankshaft.

Then, pull out seal using pulling hook (T20143/1).

Remove thrust collar from end of crankshaft and mark thrust collar on its face surface - arrow - using a waterproof felt pen. 

Installing

-

Before installing, remove oil remains from end of crankshaft and thrust collar with a clean cloth.

-

Press in new seal up to stop using pressure piece (T40007).
