Removing and installing steering lock housing
Removing and installing steering lock housing
  Caution
To disconnect and reconnect the battery, the procedure described in the workshop manual should be strictly adhered to → Chapter.
  Caution
t  The steering lock could be destroyed.
t  If the steering lock is actuated without lock cylinder, it will block and must be renewed.
t  The steering lock must not be actuated without lock cylinder.
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Angle hand drill
   
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1410-
Removing:
  Note
To remove the steering lock housing, the shear bolts must be drilled out. New shear bolts are required for subsequent installation → ETKA (electronic parts catalogue).
–  Disconnect battery → Chapter.
–  Remove steering column combination switch → Chapter.
–  Remove lock cylinder → Chapter.
–  Remove ignition/starter switch → Chapter.
  Caution
t  Ensure that all the components mounted on the steering lock housing have been removed before drilling out the shear-head bolts.
t  The drilling operation can cause swarf to penetrate the adjacent components resulting in damage and/or malfunction!
  WARNING
Danger of eye injury from drillings.
When drilling out, drillings may fly off which may cause eye injury.
Wear safety goggles.

–  Undo screw -1- and remove cable.
–  Drill out shear-head bolts -arrows- of steering lock housing -2-.
  Note
M8 bolts -arrows-, core diameter 6.8 mm
–  Pull steering lock housing -2- towards the rear and off steering column.

Installing:
–  Push steering lock housing -2- onto steering column in a straight line as far as it will go and align with the threaded holes.
–  Secure steering lock housing -2- to steering column using new shear-head bolts -arrows-.
–  Tighten new shear-head bolts -arrows- until bolt heads shear off.
–  Secure cable with screw -1-.
–  Install all components in reverse order of removal.
