Brake Caliper: Service and Repair

CALIPER DISASSEMBLE

    The caliper consists of two paired halves which are bolted together. Under no circumstances should the two halves be separated.

1.

Raise and support front of vehicle. Remove wheels then calipers.

2.

Position caliper ear in a suitable vise.

3.

Carefully pry out dust boot with a screwdriver.

4.

Restrain one piston with a C-clamp, then position a block of wood between the two pistons. Apply compressed air to hydraulic fluid inlet to force
unrestrained piston outward in the block of wood, remove piston.

5.

Remove piston seal carefully with a screwdriver.

6.

Assemble caliper as explained in ``Caliper Assemble'' and repeat procedure for other caliper piston.

CALIPER ASSEMBLE

1.

Lubricate new piston seal with brake cylinder paste and install in bore.

2.

Using a C-clamp or other suitable tool press piston into bore. Before piston is fully seated install dust seal engaging sealing lip into piston and
caliper bore.

3.

Using hand pressure fully seat piston. Ensure dust boot is fully seated. On Teves caliper, place noise dampening plates in position in caliper.
Notches in piston must align with lugs on dampening plates, if not rotate piston, notches must face down against forward rotor rotation,

4.

Install caliper, torque caliper retaining bolts to 116 ft. lbs. then bleed brakes.
