Brake Shoe: Service and Repair

1.

Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel assembly.

2.

Loosen nuts at parking brake equalizer and release parking brake cables, then loosen adjuster through hole in backing plate.

3.

Using puller OTC 827-B or equivalent, remove brake drum.

Remove spring retainers and hold down springs, then disconnect parking brake cable from lever on brake shoe.

5.

Remove lower return spring and adjuster spring, then move shoe out of lower support.

6.

Disconnect return springs and remove brake shoes along with push/adjusting rod.

CAUTION:Do not press pistons out of wheel cylinder.

7.

Lubricate threads of push/adjusting rod and ensure that adjuster moves freely, then install brake shoes together with return springs.

8.

Insert brake shoes into lower supports, then pry brake shoe away from wheel cylinder with a suitable screwdriver and install push/adjusting rod.

9.

Install hold down springs and retainers, then the adjuster spring.

10.

Attach parking brake cable to lever on brake shoe, then install lower spring.

11.

Perform basic adjustment of brake shoes by turning adjuster until clearance between drum inner diameter and outer diameter of shoes is .059 inch.

12.

Adjust parking brake cables, refer to Brakes and Traction Control/Brakes/Parking Brake System/Adjustments.

NOTE:There must be no play between lever on brake shoe and push/adjusting rod.

13.

Install hub and brake drum.  Tighten axle nut to:

369 lb ft (500 Nm)

Turn further, if necessary, to fit new cotter pin into hole in axle shaft.

14.

Depress brake pedal several times prior to driving so that rear brakes self adjust.
