Fuel Pressure Regulator: Description and Operation

  The fuel pressure regulator, Fig. 7 is attached to the end of the fuel rail and consists of a metal housing containing a spring loaded diaphragm.  When 
fuel pressure exceeds the working pressure of the regulator, the diaphragm moves, exposing an opening to an overflow duct which allows excess fuel
to return to the fuel tank, lowering the fuel pressure.  This reduced fuel pressure allows the diaphragm to move back to its original position, closing the
fuel return outlet.  This sequence of events is repeated as long as the pump is running, keeping fuel pressure constant as fuel demand varies.  The
spring housing of the regulator is connected to the engine intake manifold by vacuum tubing.  By allowing the regulator to sense intake manifold
pressure changes, the pressure drop across the injector nozzle remains constant because the fuel pressure will alter as manifold pressure changes.  This
arrangement ensures that the amount of fuel injected is only dependent on the duration of injector open time.
