Checking Pinion Position
Marking of Pinion Position in rear axle
Starting in January, 1990, no marking of pinion position is made if the position is "30". (Most pinions have position "30".) The marking is made as
before if the position is something other than "30". In other words, no marking means that the distance between the reference piece and the smallest
diameter on the gauge (tool 2393) must be 0.30 mm + 0.03 mm when installing pinion. See figure below. This change affects all pinions, including
pinions in parts kits for older rear axles.
Note:
Don't misunderstand four (4) number marking on pinion end for fitting pinion to crown wheel as pinion height. See figure.
Example given:
Pinion marked "28" as shown identifies a pinion height of 0.28 mm.
