Removing and installing swivel joint

Special tools and workshop equipment required

t	Ball joint puller -3287A-

t	Torque wrench -V.A.G 1332-

t	Engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A-

t	Angle wrench -V.A.G 1756-

t  Socket AF 36 mm -T10125- Removing –  Lift vehicle far enough to take weight off front axle. –  Slacken 12-point nut for drive shaft using socket AF 36 mm -T10125-.   Caution The vehicle must not be standing on its wheels when this bolt is loosened or tightened. The wheel bearing can be damaged by the weight of the vehicle if the nut is loosened. If a vehicle has to be moved with the drive shaft removed, an outer joint must be fitted and tightened to 50 Nm. –  Remove wheel.

–  Unscrew nuts -arrows-. –  Pull drive shaft slightly out of wheel hub, or pull out completely if necessary. –  Pull wishbone out of swivel joint. –  Loosen nut for swivel joint.   Note Leave nut screwed on a few turns to protect threads on swivel joint.

–  Apply ball joint puller -3287 A--1- as shown in illustration and press out swivel joint.   Note Place gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- or similar underneath (risk of accident from parts dropping out when swivel joint is pressed out). Installing Installation is performed in reverse sequence; note the following: –  Check and adjust wheel alignment as required, see chart → Chapter. –  Insert swivel joint in wheel bearing housing. –  Screw on new nut (counterhold swivel joint with Torx key if necessary). –  Fit drive shaft in wheel hub.

Important: Make sure that deflector ring -1- is clipped completely onto outer joint.   Note Deflector ring -1- must be flush with contact surface of outer joint -arrow-.

–  Tighten nuts -arrows-.   Note Ensure sealing boot is not damaged or twisted. Tightening torques → Chapter „Exploded view - subframe, swivel joint, wishbone, anti-roll bar, coupling rod“ –  Fit and secure wheel → Rep. gr.44. –  Tighten 12-point nut using 36 mm socket -T10125- → Chapter.
