General notes on self-diagnosis
Connecting vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 and selecting engine electronics control unit

All functions which could previously be performed with V.A.G 1551/1552 can also be performed with the new vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 in the operating mode: "Vehicle self-diagnosis":

Special tools, workshop equipment, testers, measuring instruments and auxiliary items required

  • ◆ VAS 5051 Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System

Test conditions

  • ● Fuse OK.
  • ● The battery voltage must be at least 11.5 V.
  • ● Switch off air conditioner.
  • ● On vehicles with automatic gearbox, make sure selector lever is in "P" or "N".

Work sequence

  • ‒ → Connect up vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 with diagnostic cable VAS 5051/1.
Warning:
  • ◆ When carrying out road tests using vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051, the tester must always be secured on the rear seat and operated from this position.

Depending on the function required:

  • ‒ Switch on ignition

  • Start the engine : table of "Functions which can be selected".

Select operating mode:

  • ‒ → Select "Vehicle self-diagnosis" on VAS 5051.

→ Indicated on display:

Select vehicle system:

  • ‒ Select
    "01 - Engine electronics"
    on the display.

Notes:

  • ◆ A message will appear in display zone -1- instructing you to select the required vehicle system.
  • ◆ Move the scroll bar -2- up or down to display all other vehicle systems with diagnosis capability (for all models and equipment versions) which are not visible on the screen.

→ Wait until the message "Select diagnosis function" appears in display zone -1- of VAS 5051.

The control unit identification and coding will be displayed in display zone -2-, as in this example:

At this point all diagnostic functions are available.

  • ‒ → Select the desired function on the display.
  • ‒ Further measures see repair procedures.

Notes:

  • ◆ In the functions 04 - Basic setting/08 - Read data block, the display zones will be listed from top to bottom.
  • ◆ If the display does not indicate as described in the work sequence:
