Removing
Securing vehicle to lifting platform
The vehicle must be secured to the support arms of the lifting platform before the rear axle is removed from the mounting brackets.
If vehicle is not secured, there is a risk of it slipping off the lifting platform.
   
–  Run tensioning strap -T10038--1- through mounting bracket for rear axle.
The vehicle must be secured on both sides with the tensioning straps.
–  Remove wheels.

–  Unscrew bolts for wheel housing liners -arrows- on both sides.
–  Unclip speed sensor wiring from bracket on rear axle.

–  Remove heat shield from fuel tank (left-side) -arrows-.

–  Remove bolts -arrows- securing bracket for brake hoses -1- and open clamp -2-.

–  Detach cable -3- from handbrake cable bracket -2-.
–  Release fastener -4- and detach cable.
–  Bring engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- into position.
–  Remove bolts -1- for rear axle beam.
–  Lower rear axle approx. 10 cm with engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A-.

–  Secure rear axle at bracket for exhaust system -arrow- using tensioning strap -T10038-. Make sure that brake pipes and hoses are not under tension.
  Note!
t  Watch for washers fitted on bushes when removing rear axle from mounting brackets. These is a risk of accident if these washers are allowed to drop out.
t  Place engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- under axle beam (to prevent any risk of accident from parts dropping out when bush is pulled out).
Pressing out bonded rubber bush

The illustration shows the set-up for removing the bush on the left side of the rear axle.
–  Set up special tools on rear axle as illustrated.
–  Press out bonded rubber bush.
