Tightening torques > < Cold fluid:
Fluid at operating temperature (above approx. 50°C):
Fluid at operating temperature (above approx. 50°C):
–  Allow engine to idle for approx. 2 minutes with front wheels set to straight-ahead position.
–  Stop engine and switch off ignition.
   
–  Check fluid level.
The fluid level should be between the bottom mark -arrow A- and the top mark -arrow B- on the dipstick.
A fluid level over the mark -arrow B- is permissible when the hydraulic fluid is at operating temperature.
  Note!
t  Do not extract hydraulic fluid if the fluid level is over the mark -arrow B-.
t  If the fluid level is below the range specified, the hydraulic system must be checked for leaks (Checking power steering system for leaks → Chapter). In this case it is not sufficient to merely top up the fluid.
–  If there are no leaks in the hydraulic system, top up hydraulic fluid.
–  Screw cap hand-tight onto the motor/pump unit reservoir.
Vehicles with basic running gear
–  Install front left wheel housing liner → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. Gr.66.
–  Fit and secure wheel → Chapter.
Vehicles with 1.2 TDI running gear
–  Install engine bonnet → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. Gr.55.
