Checking gear oil level in final drive
Procedure
–  Carry out a short test drive in order to heat gear oil to approx. 60 °C.
–  Drive vehicle onto a lifting platform or over an inspection pit in order for it to be absolutely horizontal.
–  Switch off engine and let gear oil drip into gearbox housing for 5 minutes.
   
Vehicles without inspection plug in final drive
  Note
Check gear oil level at drive for speedometer sender -G22-.
–  Remove drive for speedometer sender at top of gearbox -arrow- and clean with cloth.

–  Install drive for speedometer sender and remove again, check gear oil level.
l  Specification: gear oil level between “Min” and “Max”.
  Note
t  The gear oil quantity between “Min” and “Max” is 0.1 litre.
t  Excess gear oil can be drawn off with used oil collection and extraction unit -V.A.G 1782-.
–  Top up gear oil as necessary; specification → Chapter.
–  Install drive for speedometer sender -G22- → Chapter.

Vehicles with inspection plug in final drive
–  Remove plug -1-.
–  Check the oil level with a suitable improvised tool, e.g. bent wire.
l  Specification: gear oil level up to bottom lip of filler hole.
–  Top up gear oil as necessary; specification → Chapter.
  Note
Renew seal on plug.
–  Tighten plug.
l  Tightening torque: 25 Nm.
