t  Extractor hook -VW 771/37-

t  Thrust piece -T10087-
t  Sealant -D 176 404 A2-
  Note
t  Observe the general repair instructions → Chapter.
t  Observe rules for cleanliness when working on the gearbox → Chapter.
Removing oil seal for flange shaft (left-side)
–  Loosen bolts for left front wheel.
–  Raise vehicle.
–  Remove left wheel.

–  Detach noise insulation below engine/gearbox -arrows-.

–  Remove left noise insulation -arrows-.
–  Turn steering to the left.
–  Unbolt drive shaft from flange shaft.

–  Mark positions of bolts -arrows- securing swivel joint to wishbone (left-side), otherwise wheel alignment will have to be checked.
–  Remove bolts -arrows-.
  N40-0259
–  Detach coupling rod (left-side) -1- from wishbone and turn coupling rod upwards.
–  Swivel wheel bearing housing outwards.
–  Guide drive shaft -2- (left-side) out between subframe and gearbox.
–  Lift drive shaft and secure to suspension strut with wire.
–  Unscrew countersunk bolt → Item.
–  Place drip tray under the gearbox.
–  Carefully pull out flange shaft with spring. Make sure that tapered ring, thrust washer and spring do not drop out.

–  Pull out flange shaft oil seal using -VW 771- and -VW 771/37-.

–  Drive in new oil seal until thrust piece contacts stop, ensuring that seal remains straight.
–  Lightly lubricate sealing lips of oil seal with ATF.
–  Install flange shaft.
–  Apply sealant -D 176 404 A2- to tapered section of countersunk bolt.
–  Tighten countersunk bolt. Tightening torque → Item
–  Bolt swivel joint to wishbone in original position and attach coupling rod to wishbone → Running gear, front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive; Rep. gr.40.
–  Bolt drive shaft to gearbox → Running gear, front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive; Rep. gr.40.
–  Then check and top up ATF level → Chapter.
–  Install noise insulation → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.50.
–  Fit wheel → Running gear, front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive; Rep. gr.44.
