Separating engine and gearbox
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Lifting tackle -2024 A-
t  Workshop hoist -VAS 6100- or -V.A.G 1202 A-
t  15 mm socket insert -Matra V/175- (for vehicles with automatic gearbox)

Procedure
l  Engine/gearbox assembly removed and attached to engine bracket -T10012-.
   
Vehicles with manual gearbox:
–  Unscrew bolt -1- with gearbox installed.
–  Pull up cover plate -2- and remove.

Shown in illustration with gearbox removed.

Vehicles with automatic gearbox:
–  Disconnect coolant hoses from ATF cooler -arrow-.

–  Remove plug in drilling on torque converter cover plate.
–  Unscrew 3 nuts for torque converter -arrow- using 15 mm socket insert -Matra V/175- (turn crankshaft 1/3 turn each time).
  Note
Counterhold at central bolt of vibration damper when unscrewing nuts for torque converter.
–  Remove starter.

–  Hook lifting tackle -2024 A- onto automatic gearbox and workshop hoist -VAS 6100- or -V.A.G 1202 A-.
  Note
To adjust to the centre of gravity of the assembly, the perforated rails of the support hooks must be positioned as shown.
  WARNING
Support hooks and locking pins on lifting tackle must be secured with locking clips -arrows in illustration-.

All models:
–  Remove bolts -1 ... 8- on engine/gearbox flange.
–  Remove starter.
  Note
The manual gearbox can be detached from the engine without a workshop crane, a 2nd mechanic is required for this purpose.
–  Remove gearbox from engine.
