Removing and installing coolant pump Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Drip tray for workshop hoist -VAS 6208- or -V.A.G 1306-

t  Hose clip pliers -V.A.G 1921- Removing   WARNING Hot steam or hot coolant can escape when expansion tank is opened; cover filler cap with cloth and open carefully. –  Open filler cap on coolant expansion tank.

–  Take off engine cover panel -arrows-.

–  Remove noise insulation panels (centre and right) -arrows-.

–  Place drip tray for workshop hoist -VAS 6208- or -V.A.G 1306- under engine. –  Turn drain plug -arrow- on radiator anti-clockwise, if necessary fit drain hose to connection.

–  Also disconnect coolant hose at bottom of oil cooler -arrow-, and drain off remaining coolant.   Note

Before removing, mark direction of rotation of poly V-belt with chalk or felt-tipped pen. If the belt runs in the opposite direction when it is refitted, this can cause breakage. –  Turn the tensioner in the direction of the -arrow- to slacken the poly V-belt. –  Lock poly V-belt tensioner using locking pin -T10060 A-. –  Remove poly V-belt.

–  Detach splash plate -2-. –  Remove tensioner -1- for poly V-belt.

–  Remove toothed belt from camshaft sprocket → Chapter. –  Remove toothed belt cover (centre) -arrows-.   Note t  The belt pulley and toothed belt cover (bottom) do not have to be removed. t  The toothed belt should be left in position on the crankshaft sprocket. t  Before removing coolant pump, cover toothed belt with a cloth to protect against coolant.

–  Unscrew bolts -1- for coolant pump and remove coolant pump -2-. –  Remove O-ring -3-. Installing Installation is carried out in the reverse order; note the following:   Note Renew O-ring. –  Clean and smoothen sealing surface for O-ring as required. –  Lubricate new O-ring -3- with coolant additive “G12+”. –  Fit coolant pump -2-. l  Installation position: Sealing plug in housing faces downwards. –  Tighten bolts -1- for coolant pump. –  Fit toothed belt (adjust valve timing) → Anchor. –  Install poly V-belt → Chapter. –  Fill cooling system → Anchor. Tightening torques
