The throttle valve potentiometer (G69) informs the engine control unit of the position of the throttle valve.

Test conditions

  • ● Check the throttle cable setting

=> 4-cylinder engine, mechanical components; Repair Group 20

  • ‒ Switch on the ignition.
  • ‒ Select the function "Reading measured value block" (function 08) and Display Group 01

→ Display readout:
Read measured value block 1    ⇒
    0 rpm    0.00 ms    4 -5    xxxBDTC
  • ‒ Check display in display zone 3.

→ Specified value: 0...5 <°
Read measured value block 1    ⇒
    0 rpm    0.00 ms    4 -5    xxxBDTC
  • ‒ Slowly depress accelerator pedal.

→ Specified value: The readout in display zone 3 should increase steadily until it reaches 85...90 <° (with accelerator pedal fully depressed).
Read measured value block 1    ⇒
    0 rpm    0.00 ms    86 -5    xxxBDTC

If either the initial or the final specification is not achieved:

  • ‒ Check the power supply.

If the display does not change or only changes irregularly:

  • ‒ Check the wiring
    .

Check the power supply to the throttle valve control unit

A23-0006
  • ‒ Unplug the connector from the throttle valve control unit.
  • ‒ → Connect the V.A.G 1526 hand held multimeter for voltage measurement to contact 4 of the connector and the earth.
  • ‒ Switch on the ignition.
  • Specified value: approx 5 V

Check wiring

  • ‒ Switch the ignition off.
  • ‒ Connect the V.A.G 1598/22 test box to the wiring harness for the engine control unit
    .

The following wiring should be checked for a short to positive or negative and an open circuit:

  • ‒ If necessary, rectify open circuit or short circuit.

=> Current Flow Diagrams, Electrical Fault Finding and Fitting Locations binder

If no wiring fault is detected:

  • ‒ Test sensor for throttle valve positioner
    => Page 24-74.
