Checking selector lever position on automatic gearbox

Note:

In selector lever positions P and N, the J226 relay for the starter inhibitor and reversing light switches contact 22 on the engine control unit to earth.

  • ‒ Connect the V.A.G. 1551 fault reader .
  • ‒ Switch on the ignition.
  • ‒ Select the function "Reading measured value block" (function 08) and Display Group 20 % Page.

→ Display readout:
Read measured value block 20    ⇒
860 rpm    Neutral    A/C-Low    Compr. OFF

Observe readout in display zone 2.

  • Specified value: "Neutral" (selector lever in P or N)
  • ‒ Operate the footbrake and engage a gear.

→ Display readout:
Read measured value block 20    ⇒
860 rpm    Neutral    A/C-Low    Compr. OFF

Observe readout in display zone 2.

  • Specified value: Driving position "ON"

A28-0022

If the display is not as described:

  • ‒ Switch the ignition off.
  • ‒ → Connect the V.A.G 1598/22 test box to the wiring harness for the engine control unit
    => Page 24-8.
  • ‒ Connect the diode test lamp between contact 3 (terminal 30) and contact 22.
  • ‒ The diode test lamp should go out when a gear is engaged.
  • ‒ Move selector lever to position P or N.

The diode test lamp should light up.

If the diode test lamp does not light up:

  • ‒ Test for an open circuit and short to positive or earth in the wiring between gearbox control unit and contact 22 on engine control unit.

=> Current Flow Diagrams, Electrical Fault Finding and Fitting Locations binder

  • ‒ If there are no faults in the wiring, test the multi function switch.
