Note:

• ◆ When the selector lever is in the P or N position the starter inhibitor and reversing light relay -J226 connects contact 22 on the engine control unit to earth.

• ‒ Connect fault reader V.A.G 1551
  .
• ‒ Switch ignition on.
• ‒ Read measured value block (function 08) and select Display Group 20.

Display zone 2 should read "Neutral" (selector lever in position P or N).

• ‒ Operate the footbrake and engage a gear.

The display should read "Gear engag".

• ‒ → If the display readout is not as specified, connect test box V.A.G 1598/22 to the wiring harness for the engine control unit
  => Page 24-8.
• ‒ Connect diode test lamp between socket 3 (terminal 30) and socket 22.
• ‒ The diode test lamp should go out when a gear is engaged.
• ‒ The diode test lamp should light up when the selector lever is in position P or N.
• ‒ If the display readouts are not as specified, test for open circuit and short to positive or earth in wiring between gearbox control unit and contact 22 on engine control unit, using current flow diagram

• ‒ If there are no faults in the wiring, test the multi-function switch.
