Testing control unit input values
Testing engine speed sender -G28

The engine speed sender is speed and reference mark sender. A failure stops the engine.

Testing internal resistance

  • ‒ Switch off ignition.
  • ‒ → Disconnect grey connector to engine speed sender -2-.
 
A24-0089
  • ‒ → Connect multimeter (resistance measurement range) between contacts 1 and 2.
    • ‒ Specification: 450 ... 550 ω

If the specification is not obtained:

  • ‒ Fit a new engine speed sender.

If the specification is obtained:

Checking wiring connections

  • ‒ Connect test box V.A.G 1598/31 to wiring harness for engine control unit.Do notconnect to the engine control unit itself:
    • ‒ Connecting test box to engine control unit without protective housing=>Page 23-49.
    • ‒ Connecting test box to engine control unit with protective housing=>Page 23-51.

  • ‒ → Test for open circuit and short to positive or earth in the following wiring connections:

  • ‒ Test all wires for short circuits with each other.

If no fault is detected in the wiring:

  • ‒ Replace engine control unit
    • ‒ Removing and installing engine control unit without protective housing=>Page 23-57.
    • ‒ Removing and installing engine control unit with protective housing=>Page 23-60.
