Wheel bearing housing

General:

Loadbearing and suspension elements are not to be welded and straightened.

Wheel bearings are not to be subjected to load after unfastening drive shaft bolted joint on wheel end.

Subjecting the wheel bearings to the dead weight of the vehicle would cause wheel bearing damage and shorten their service life. Attention is therefore to be paid to the following:

  • ◆ Procedure for unfastening twelve-point nut
  • ◆ Procedure for slackening off hexagon collared bolt => Page 40-139

Never move vehicles without drive shaft fitted, as otherwise wheel bearing damage will result. Should it nevertheless become necessary to move the vehicle, always heed the following:

  • ‒ Fit an outer joint instead of the drive shaft.
  • ‒ Tighten the outer joint to 120 Nm.

If wheel alignment is subsequently to be performed on vehicle, bolts and nuts to be unfastened for adjustment work are only to be tightened to torque. These bolts and nuts are then to be finish-tightened by the prescribed extra turn on completion of wheel alignment/adjustment.

Attention:
All bolts and nuts must be properly tightened on vehicles being used on public roads.
