Removing and installing shift unit (vehicles from 11.2009 onwards) Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Hose clip pliers -VAS 6340- Removing –  Remove selector lever handle → Chapter. –  Switch off ignition. –  Remove selector lever display illumination bulb -L101- → Chapter. –  Remove ashtray or storage compartment in front of selector mechanism → General body repairs, interior; Rep. Gr.68.

–  Unplug electrical connector -1- between shift unit and vehicle wiring harness.   Note -Item 2- can be disregarded.

Vehicles with 4-cylinder 2.0 ltr. TFSI engine: There are two different versions of this engine. Version 1 (with air cleaner housing at side): –  Unplug electrical connector -1- from air mass meter -G70-. –  Remove air hose -2-. –  Remove bolt -4- and remove air cleaner housing.   Note -Item 3- can be disregarded.

Version 2 (with air cleaner housing in engine cover panel): –  Unplug electrical connector -3- from air mass meter -G70-. –  Release clamps -1 and 2- and disconnect air hose from air mass meter. –  Release spring-type clips -4- and detach air intake hose from engine cover panel.

Caution Risk of breaking engine cover panel. It is important to observe the removal sequence. –  Carefully detach engine cover panel from positions -1, 2, 3, 4- one after the other.

Vehicles with 6-cylinder 3.2 ltr. engine: –  Detach vacuum hose -2- at air intake hose. –  Detach air intake hose -1- at throttle valve module -J338-. –  Unplug electrical connector -3- from air mass meter -G70-. –  Unbolt air cleaner (top section) -arrow-. –  Remove filter element.

–  Unbolt air cleaner (bottom section) -arrows-.

Continued for all vehicles: –  Shift selector lever into position “P”. –  Detach retaining clip -C-. –  Release securing clip -A- detach by pulling upwards. –  Press selector lever cable off gearbox selector lever -arrow- and move clear to the top.   Note t  Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable. t  Items -1, B and D- can be disregarded. –  Raise vehicle.

–  Remove noise insulation → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. Gr.50. –  Remove front exhaust pipes with catalytic converter and front silencer → Engine, mechanics; Rep. Gr.26. –  Remove propshaft → Rear final drive 02D, 0AV, 0BR and 0BY; Rep. Gr.39.

Vehicles with 4-cylinder 2.0 ltr. TFSI engine: –  Remove nuts -arrows- from covers for vehicle underbody (both sides).

Continued for all vehicles: –  Loosen clips -arrows- and detach heat shield towards rear.   Note

The assistance of a second mechanic is required to detach the shift unit from below. –  Remove nuts -arrows- in vehicle interior. –  Detach shift unit together with selector lever cable by pulling them off downwards.   Note Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable. Installing Installation is carried out in reverse sequence; note the following: l  Tightening torques → Chapter „Exploded view - shift mechanism (vehicles from 11.2009 onwards)“   Note Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable. –  Install heat shield and aerodynamic fairings (Cd panels) for underbody → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. Gr.66. –  Install propshaft → Rear final drive 02D, 0AV, 0BR and 0BY; Rep. Gr.39. –  Install exhaust system so it is free of stress → Engine, mechanics; Rep. Gr.26. –  Install ashtray or storage compartment in front of selector mechanism → General body repairs, interior; Rep. Gr.68. –  Install selector lever display illumination bulb -L101- → Chapter. –  Install selector lever handle → Chapter. –  → Chapter „Checking function of ignition key removal lock“. –  → Chapter „Checking and adjusting selector lever cable“. –  → Chapter „Checking selector mechanism“. –  Install air cleaner housing → Injection and ignition system; Rep. Gr.24.
