Removing and installing gear oil filter Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Used oil collection and extraction unit -V.A.G 1782-

Removing –  Switch off ignition. Vehicles with 1.8 ltr. TFSI engine: –  Remove engine cover panel -arrows-. –  Remove air cleaner housing → Injection and ignition system; Rep. Gr.24.

Vehicles with 2.0 ltr. TFSI engine: –  Unplug electrical connector -1- from air mass meter -G70-. –  Unclip air intake connection -bottom arrows-. –  Remove engine cover panel -top arrows-.

Vehicles with TDI engine (unit injector): –  Lift engine cover panel at the sides -arrows 2- and pull out from the front -arrow 3-. –  Remove air cleaner housing → Injection and glow plug system; Rep. Gr.23.

Vehicles with TDI engine (common rail): –  Remove engine cover panel -arrows-. –  Remove air cleaner housing → Injection and glow plug system; Rep. Gr.23.

Continued for all vehicles:   Caution When disconnecting the battery there is a risk of serious damage to electronic components: Observe the correct procedure for disconnecting the battery. –  Remove battery → Electrical system; Rep. Gr.27. –  Remove bolts -arrows- and detach battery tray.

–  Place used oil collection and extraction unit -V.A.G 1782- below gearbox. –  Unscrew gear oil filter housing.   Note Before removing the filter housing from the gearbox, tilt it slightly in its seat. This will enable the oil in the filter housing to drain back into the gearbox. –  Then lift out filter element slowly.   Note

If the O-ring on the intake neck -arrow- of the filter element does not come off together with the filter element, you must remove it from the gearbox separately. Installing Installation is carried out in reverse sequence; note the following: l  Tightening torques → Chapter „Exploded view - gear oil cooler and gear oil filter“   Note Renew filter element and O-ring on housing for gear oil filter.

–  Lightly lubricate O-ring on intake neck -arrow- of filter element with gear oil. –  Install gear oil filter with collar facing downwards -arrow-.

–  Lightly lubricate O-ring on filter housing with gear oil before screwing onto gearbox. –  Install battery tray and battery → Electrical system; Rep. Gr.27. –  Install air cleaner housing → Injection and glow plug system; Rep. Gr.23 or → Injection and ignition system; Rep. Gr.24. –  → Chapter „Checking gear oil level and topping up“.
