Removing
  Note
The locking cable must not be bent or kinked.
–  Shift selector lever to position “S”.
  Caution
Follow steps required when disconnecting battery → Electrical system; Rep. Gr.27.
–  With the ignition switched off, disconnect battery earth strap.
–  Remove storage compartment on driver's side → General body repairs, interior; Rep. Gr.68.
–  Remove steering column cover → General body repairs, interior; Rep. Gr.68.
–  Remove air conditioning control console → Air conditioning; Rep. Gr.87.
–  Remove ashtray from centre console → General body repairs, interior; Rep. Gr.68.
–  Remove selector mechanism cover → Chapter.
–  Turn ignition key to "ignition on" position.
–  Shift selector lever to position “P”.
   
–  Lift up retaining clip -2- on locking device and pull locking rod -1- out of ignition/starter switch.

–  Lift up securing spring for locking cable and pull locking cable off sideways -arrows-.

 - Installing
Installation is carried out in reverse sequence; note the following:
–  Route locking cable behind dash panel brace -arrow- without kinking.
–  Turn ignition key to "ignition on" position.
–  Insert locking cable -1- into ignition/starter switch.
–  Check that locking device -2- engages.
–  Turn ignition/starter switch to locked position (ignition off).
–  Make sure that selector lever is in position “P”.
–  Hook eye of locking cable onto pin -3-.
–  Lift up securing spring -4- slightly.
–  Insert locking cable support bracket -5- into the selector mechanism from the right. Push it in so that securing spring -4- engages.
–  Adjust locking cable → Chapter „Adjusting locking cable on vehicles with vehicle ID No. up to 8E_8A 002699“.
–  Install selector mechanism cover → Chapter.
–  Install ashtray in centre console → General body repairs, interior; Rep. Gr.68.
–  Install air conditioning operating unit → Air conditioning; Rep. Gr.87.
–  Install steering column cover → General body repairs, interior; Rep. Gr.68.
–  Install storage compartment on driver's side → General body repairs, interior; Rep. Gr.68.
–  Follow steps required after connecting battery → Electrical system; Rep. Gr.27.
