Removing and installing power steering pump (vehicles with 6-cyl. petrol engine) (MPI)

Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Pin wrench -3212-
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331-
Removing
–  Remove poly V-belt. → 6-cylinder engine, mechanics; Rep. Gr. 13; Dismantling and assembling engine
  W00-0462
–  Unbolt power steering pump pulley -arrows-, using pin wrench 3212 to counterhold.
–  Detach ignition coil.
Does not apply to A4 with 3.0 ltr. engine

–  Unscrew rear power steering pump securing bolt using socket wrench and extension.
  Note
The intake manifold may have to be detached on vehicles fitted with a stud and nut → Rep. Gr.24.

–  Remove banjo bolt -1-.
–  Disconnect suction hose -2-.
–  Unscrew bolts -arrows- and detach power steering pump with bracket.
  Note
Place a cloth under the hydraulic pressure lines to catch escaping fluid.
Installing
Installation is performed in reverse sequence; note the following:

t  Renew gaskets and seals.
t  Before fitting a new pump, put in hydraulic fluid at the inlet and turn pump by hand until fluid flows out at the pressure outlet.
t  Secure all hose connections with new hose clips. → Parts catalogue
–  Turn hub by hand until fluid comes out at pump outlet.
–  Install power steering pump. → 6-cylinder engine, mechanics; Rep. Gr. 13; Dismantling and assembling engine
–  Fit new seals on banjo bolt.
–  Tighten banjo bolt for pressure hose → Item.
–  Install suction hose. Installation position → Chapter.
–  Bolt on power steering pump pulley. → 6-cylinder engine, mechanics; Rep. Gr. 13; Dismantling and assembling engine
–  Fit poly V-belt. → 6-cylinder engine, mechanics; Rep. Gr. 13; Dismantling and assembling engine
–  Check hydraulic fluid level → Chapter.
–  Bleed steering system → Chapter.
–  Check steering system for leaks → Chapter.
