• ◆ Extractor lever VW 681

• ◆ Press piece 3377
• ◆ Drip tray

Removing

• ● Gearbox installed.

• ‒ Do not loosen collared bolt for drive shaft further than 90°while the vehicle is still standing on its wheels, otherwise the wheel bearing will be damaged.
• ‒ Remove front left wheel.

Vehicles with TDI engine:

• ‒ → Remove rear noise insulation -D- (-arrows C-).

• ‒ → Remove bolt -2- securing noise insulation cover above left drive shaft.
• ‒ Disengage retainer -1- and remove noise insulation cover.

All models

• ‒ Remove left drive shaft.

=> Running gear, Front and four-wheel drive; Repair group 40; Removing and installing drive shaft

• ‒ Place container under the gearbox.
• ‒ Unscrew central bolt for left flange shaft (use pin to prevent flange shaft from turning).
• ‒ Pull out flange shaft.
• ‒ Pull out flange shaft oil seal with extractor lever VW 681.

Installing

Install in reverse sequence; note the following points:

• ‒ Moisten outer circumference of seal with gear oil.
• ‒ → Half fill space between sealing lip and dust lip with grease G 052 128 A1.

Note:

Ensure that seal is inserted in housing at same depth all round.

• ‒ → Drive new seal in onto stop, when doing this do not cant seal.
• ‒ Installation position: open side of seal towards gearbox
• ‒ Install flange shaft with compression spring, thrust washer, tapered ring and circlip.

• ‒ → Both lugs -2- on drive gear for speedometer sender must engage between tabs -1- on thrust washer.

Note:

Conical thrust surface on tapered ring faces towards differential.

• ‒ Insert left flange shaft into gearbox.
• ‒ Install left drive shaft.

=> Running gear, Front and four-wheel drive; Repair group 40; Removing and installing drive shaft

• ‒ Check oil level in final drive of automatic gearbox .
