Checking and changing ATF
Additional ATF check on vehicles equipped with an additional ATF cooler

This check needs to be performed if the additional ATF cooler has been drained or exchanged. Fitting location of additional ATF cooler , item A.

Test requirements:

  • ● Gearbox not in emergency running mode.
  • ● ATF is topped up => 37-139

  • ● Selector lever at position "P", engine idling.
  • ● The air conditioner and heating system must be switched off.
  • ◆ The ATF temperature is read from the vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 or from the fault reader V.A.G 1551.

Reading off ATF temperature

  • ‒ → Connect up vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system VAS 5051 with diagnostic cable VAS 5051/1. Alternatively, connect fault reader V.A.G 1551 with diagnostic cable V.A.G 1551/3A.

  • ‒ Start engine.

  • ‒ Enter "08" to select the function "Reading measured value block" and confirm entry with Q key.

  • ‒ Enter "004" to select display group number "004" and confirm entry with Q key.

  • ‒ Read off ATF temperature in display zone 1.
  • ‒ Leave the engine running until the ATF reaches a temperature of at least 85 °C. If necessary carry out a road test to achieve this temperature.

Note:

The thermostat at the input of the additional ATF cooler only opens above 80 °C, allowing the cooler to fill with ATF.

The capacity of the additional ATF cooler is 140 ml of ATF.

  • ‒ Switch off the engine and allow the ATF to cool back down to a temperature below 35 °C.
  • ‒ Check the ATF level => Page 37-132.
